Winterizing Your Fire Sprinkler System

Winter is coming, so are freeze-ups! It’s never too late to pre-winterized your sprinkler systems.

It would be catastrophic in the event of a fire and have your pipes frozen solid from the cold.  Failure to protect and maintain your system(s) could result in broken piping and costly damage to your property.

There are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your fire sprinkler pipes are protected from freezing:

  • Maintain the heat throughout your building so warm air can travel through the walls to your piping, this is especially important if the building is vacant for the extended periods of time.
  • Make sure insulation is in place to protect piping near exterior walls and in area like attics and crawl spaces.
  • Areas with wet piping and valve rooms should be maintained at a minimum temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Systems with antifreeze could still freeze if they aren’t inspected and maintained properly.

IFP can help you prepare for Cold Weather by inspecting drain valves/low point drains, testing your antifreeze ratio, and properly servicing and repairing your system.

A pre-winter inspection is recommended to make sure your system is ready for the cold weather.
